From 1978 album, like it alot

Clannad-Morning Dew

heard this on a chillout cd, not really chillout. But is a very early track of theirs, about 1972. I like Clannads early work, not really into that field but I make the exception with them

Future thinking- Band collecting

Intresting developments ahead in personal life, now got a job where I have to learn from scratch in a field Id not really done before. Also puts things on a diffrent footing as regards to computers and music. Will be updating this site quite a bit , as this site is basically a bookmark site for myself and for others. As regards to ebay and things like that, more just buy and sell on almost immediately.

Have been collecting Cds as it dawned on me about a year agao , that my collection was purely digital (ie,mp3). There are some bands I can collect, but some are way beyond my price range.

So far managed to get every uk release by the following bands Verve, Scissor sisters, u2, simple minds, leftfield, david gray, stone roses, coldplay, travis. simply red, bowie, mike oldfield, rush. All though the latter three are a mixture of original; releases and cd-rs.

My aim is not to spend anymore than 3.00 on any cds. Future bands Im collecting are Clannad(at the moment), Sabbath, kraftwerk, Joy division, fleetwood mac, prodigy.

Intresting at the moment

Soundgarden

Good to see them back,

Online auctions- A personal guide

For those about to think about selling online I thought I would provide a guide to what sites there are, the advnatages and the disadvantages. Also sort of words of warning for people who think they can beat these systems or work within them.

I have to admit I love the buzz of auctions from finding an item you dont pay much for and watch it increase in value to the winning bidders. For me I find that this field of the internet has become more regulated and more colder, more official.

A few years ago a friend and i put loads of various items on the site, at one point the listings stood at 600. It was really good at that level as you could watch numerous items end and sort of re-use the funds made to get stuff you did want. Over the last year or so Ebay has gone from putting unlimited access to 100 items only, if you go over the 100 items per month limit then you get asked to verify and have to click a button to register as a business user. This is where Ebay is failing at the moment in that the system itself is becoming more like a business that only exists for business's. Where as a personal seller can advertise items, but once they get left a negative feedback then this gives paypal(ebays bank) the right to ask for further information to put a hold on people's accounts.

This is another critism in that they hold onto people's payments and obviously earn nmoney from the intrest that accumlates. Speaking from experience here I had a verified account and paypal put a hold on all people's payments as a result I got people contatcing me saying 'where is my item'. But I couldnt post said items as the money they pay as postage was to cover the postage. Then to top things off ebay then writes to the buyers and says 'suspicous seller'. In some ways I feel that the ebay system doesnt work as a seller as you end up paying the postage out of your own money and then sometimes have to wait to get your money.

For all my critism of ebay I do feel its a brilliant site to buy from, at the moment Im buying via postal order and cheque only. Sometimes bargains can be found. As for ebay and paypal I will continue to use ebay, but paypal I advise people to stay clear of. In a way its like a bank that doesnt let you have access to your money and uses verification as a means of delay.

I have also noticed a mark increase in the ammount of people raising claims after 4 days of posting, then you go out of your way to send the item for the person the other end to claim a refund knowing said item has turned up.

What about the other sites. Play.com is quite good for selling but has a really unfair feedback percentage. For private and business sellers, you have to keep your feedback score above 80% which if you think about it can be quite hard to do, say you sell 4 items and one person doesnt like it then your instantly fighting an uphill struggle, the site works if you can maintain a high feedback score to begin with.

When I talk about negative feedback, i feel its almost an unavoidable thing. Especially if you are selling second hand goods as they are obviously not new and some people can find defects.

Amazon and ebid are what Im working with at the moment but to quite a low level, amazon only lets the money credit your bank account and you cant spend it online like wih the other sites. Ebid uses something called Escrow and lets people pay by numerous diffrent ways which ios good, also the design of the site is very good as well.

My advice, if you must use ebay and paypal. Only list 5 items for payment by paypal method after that you have to go through validation which is long winded and stops.
For everything else play and amazon

Linux...Ubuntu

A few years ago Ubuntu was on the outskirts of the linux community. I recall it having a sort of rasta feel to it . I used to watch its development and you could see it getting more and more popular. As a live cd its definately one of the best in terms of design. As with almost all linux distros there are still issues with flashplayer. I think when these linux distros come with it as standard then I think Luinuix will take of big time.

Linux can be downloaded free from distro watch which features all the newest linux. Its my plan to include more linux distros as I download and evaluate them.

Formula 1 -simulation ......

Now I dont pretend to be a computer game freak, to be honest things like unreal tournament bore me a bit. What I like about consoles is the games that act as like simulators. The formula one games that have come out over the last few years have been really good especially for the PS3. I remember back to the early 90s when the old microprose games came out, Geoff Crammond was the Designer of that game. What he brought to the games was the use of 3-d and vectors so the tracks and movement seemed more realistic.

In the mid 90s I did a few seasons on the game. Nothing special in that was the ferrari number 2, it was quite hard playing a game with no enabled cheats(ie.racing line etc). I think my championships finished like 5,6,6,8. I left it at that and brought the PS2 2001 formula one game. That has sat on the shelf for many years.

Part of my thinking with these games you can follow a career mode but the more years you go through the less relevant the game becomes. I have completed the earlier championships on the old amigas and atari's. So Im now in to the year 2002. All will become clearer, when I get to four championships then I will be up to date with the game(the 2006 season).
Its a bit like football management games where if you start in the 2010 season and then do 6 championships you wont recognise half the players. When you are playing a game relevant to the time and continuisouly it makes for good game playing.

Thats my old submission to gaming. It only holds my intrest if i have an intrest in it outside of gamning. I will post results soon and it will all make sense

Nice photo. Must be challenging navigating the boat through that

Joe Bonamassa-Guitar legend fact

I dont pretend to know much about blues rock although my tastes creep into that field from time to time. But I have to say Joe Bonamassa really does deserve greater recognition for his musical talents. Maybe in about 10 years time the music press will give him his due (hindsight is a powerful thing), in a way Im glad he is getting recnition from Eric Clapton.

Joe Bonamassa sort of delivers blues guitar at many different ways, his early stuff was very blues based, where as i would describe his new work as drawing on early blues as well as Classic rock influences. On this web site I have included a link to a concert clip(just got paid-zz top cover version.

In visual looks he reminds me of David Gilmour but his music is like a cross between Jimmy page and Early Eric Clapton. He is a brilliant guitarist.

ps3 working when it wants to

About 6 months ago we brought a ps3, nothing unusual about that maybe but we recently tried to get mit to work with the internet. This was a long process, initially we worked out what the problem was. the Ethernet port was the problem. So then we hasd a working connection, but then we had another problem. On the Ps3 it lists something called playstation home. This is a similar thing to XBOX live. So I register on the site and entered my password. Then it comes up with another error.

i have to say this is the PS3 only downfall, it should be fully functional from the outset. The Xbox is quite good once you have an active ethernet port working, the PS£ makes you alter settings to get the connection working in the first place.

Downloading....now or never

At the moment I am going through certain sites trying to find rarities amongst the listings, sort of the last throw of the downloading dice. In a way downloading is a gamble in that you take the chance and you know the risks. Luckily I have been involved in downloading musics since about 2004 when there was not any proper regulation of it, over the years business have been built on the Mp3 revolution but some have come and gone as a result.

In the last year or so the RIAA has become more aggressive in its relentless pursuit of getting people banned, particularly in america. I am now just doing a final lot and then it will be a case of buying and streaming.

My issues with the whole thing of downloading are.
- That many albums which are on P2P and torrent sites are deleted or rare, where certain record comanies who have since folded. Who owns the copyright, the songwriter maybe ?but for instance I want to download a album by 23 skidoo(as an example), the cd came out in 1983 then was deleted about a year later. If I download it , who will prosecute.
- many computing (apple, Spotify) are basing a business on something that infringes copyright.

Albums - that often get overlooked...Part 3-Depeche Mode-Some great reward

A Album i can say i brought at the time of release on trusty cassette.Looking back through their catalogue this album is one that often get overlooked but it shows that they were following their own path but also taking in influences from obscure acts.
In the early 80s Depeche Mode were very much part of the smash hits magazine pop culture. in 1983 their sound changed from highly poppy to more industrial. This album was Depeche Mode hitting their stride.

The album features tracks like 'Master and Servant', 'People are people' but also tracks like ' If You Want to'. at this time their were bands who were using industrial things like metal(einstruzende Neubaten and SPK)), Depeche Mode embraced these elements whilst still remaining commercial.

Albums - that often get overlooked...Part 2-Station to Station-David Bowie

Artist : David Bowie
title : Station To Station
year : 1976
"Station to Station"
"Golden Years"
"Word on a Wing"
"TVC 15"
"Stay"
"Wild Is the Wind"
The album before the berlin trilogy of low, heroes and the lodger'. Station to Station I would class as his most overlooked album, it doesnt feature many tracks(7 if i recall). the album starts with the title track and features 'golden Years', 'Stay'.
I think its such a natural progression from his earlier albums to the trilogy that it seems to get overlooked or scarcely mentioned, also featured 'Wild is the wind'. I think the album was originally intended to be a soundtrack album to accompany the 'man who fell to earth ' film however it was shelved. I suppose the mid 70s were a hard time for Bowie, who's Diamond Dogs album (which was based on george orwells 1984) was also shelved.

Station to Station is a brilliant album.

The Legacy of joy Division

This is a strange post to write I have to admit its hard to write about something when its so entrenched in your past, for me the music of Joy Division was there from about 1985/86, I cant actually say I as into them at the time(i was only 7 then). For me what I liked about the band initially was the production of the music and the strictness of the rythmns, I didnt get into them via a normal route. The Double album called 'Still' was my first hearing of them. This featured out-takes and a poor quality live album.
There has been 4 points which get me going back to them, the first was a Joy Division documentry which as almost film like which I watched on BBC4 about 3 years ago, in a way it unravelled most of the myths surrounding the group. The second was the film 'Control' which I watched in parts. Other points were stumbling across images of his daughter Natalie curtis and lastly picking up a book by his wife Debroah Curtis'.

The latter is a brilliant piece of work, in a way I let the book rest on a shelf for about 6 months. The thing is Joy Division were right up there with some of the classic all time rock bands, in reading it I thought i wouldnt like them in the same light. one has to say Debroah curtis is a brave woman to give such details of her life with Ian Curtis whilst keeping all that information back for so many years(the book was published in 1995).

What comes across to me in the book is that there were failings in the health service at the time in his diagnosis and his level of care, the side effects of the drugs he was taking ultimately affected his reasonable judgment. Also the lyrics of 'closer' I always classeed them as the most directed suicide note ever directed to an ex partner, at the time you thought the lyrics might have been aimed at the wife but alot of it was aimed at the mistress(horne).

The lyrics that stick in my mind about Ian Curtis are the ones where he was talking about life as a whole rather than aimed at the single person. Lyrics like 'here are the young men , weight on their shoulders'.'novelty' which was a b side to a single is quite an optimitsic song.

The legacy of Joy Division is that they influenced a music scene from small beginnings, obviously achieving long term success as New order long afterwards.

I have put a picture of Debroah and Natalie curtis at the top of the picture, it makes you realise that suicide is a futile and its the people left behind are the ones that suffer.

Albums - that often get overlooked...Part 1-Harvest'Neil Young'

On top of re-evaluations and google maps and various other stuff, I thought I would add posts about albums that often get overlooked in various bands histories. Obviously some albums are more succesful than others, but sometime for bands to reach their peak they sometimes have to record albums to get to to that point. Pink Floyd as an example without 'ummagumma' they would not have recorded the 'dark side of moon'.
Neil Youngs' Harvest' album from 1972 is my first, I remember the album cover before I heard the album. The album is a mix of electric and acoustic, the track 'alabama' was about the county and wasnt complimentry about it as a result lynrard Skynard recorded 'Sweet home alabama' as a response. This sort of deflects away from an album that is really good. 'Heart of Gold' was a brilliant song as well as'the needle and the damage done'. other tracks like 'old man' set the scene for what is a brilliant album from start to finish.

The inevitable decline of certain football teams.

I think from next month onwards all football related posts will be put on a seperate site, but these words just stick in my mind. There seems to be the acceptance within english football that football clubs run on different business model to most business. About 20 years ago before the premier league the team reflected players of that area, so for instance you would have players that grew up in a area and played for their local team. With the advent of the premier league and all that followed the money generated enabled clubs with the increase in tv revenue to buy players from abroad.

The problem is now is that the football clubs are taking financial risks on the promise of future funds. Hull city are example of this. They invested in players and the incoming chairman was warning the club that they are 35 million in debt, the chairman was obviously hoping that out of adversity and crisis the players would raise their game and realise how important staying in the top flight is. however last week they got relegated.

With portsmouth the club has been thriving on of field crises and somehow the club has managed to get itself to a cup final. I think some previous owners thought they coould find a saviour like a Roman Abrovanich , but they are very thin on the ground. With portsmouth being in debt it seemed to me that all subsequent owners inputted little money for big returns when the club went to the administrators. I see some of the owners are owed 14 million etc.

The big two Man Utd and Liverpool now have just under a billion of debt between them, one of these clubs will fall by the way side. I honestly think it will be the latter.

Ventnor- google maps

This is only about 10 miles away from here, ventnor is the southern most part of the island and has a climate that is different from the rest of the island. Houses were built mostly 100-150 years ago, so lots of winding victorian houses going down to the sea front. A lovely area to live, work s hard to find there

Google maps - Dunoon, scotland

Both these images are from Dunoon in scotland.Come across a book on the area, seems quite an unspoilt area.

Google map images.

Sort of random photos or should that be screen shots of things I come across. i think i like google maps as I have always had an intrest in geography. This shot was someone's photo of Ben nevis. There is also another picture underneath this one of Mount Everest.

Have been coming across alot of books on the subject of Everest, I sort of wonder at what makes people want to risk their lives to climb mountains and the risks they take in their desire to achieve the peaks

Icehouse-Hey little girl 1982

I like this song, its the sentiment of the lyrics. The chorus always remineded me of the best song Bryan ferry never sang, in a way it reminds me of him and sounds so alike. The singer is hopeless miming one has to say.

lady gaga- Live in australia 2009

Cant escape lady gaga at the moment, come across this after downloading it for somebody else. the songs sound a bit better in a live format, sort of reminds me of Madonna in about 1984/5 when she used to have 3/4 dancers behind her.

Mike Oldfield-The Bell 1992

Re-evaluation – Part 22. Siouxsie and the Banshees

If one band I would say influenced me more than any other it has to be Siouxsie and the Banshees. I was a bit to young to remember the Punk Explosion at the time. But with hindsight you can see that Siouxsie and the Banshees were extremely motivated to become famous. Siouxsie was part of the famour Bromley contingent who regularly followed Sex Pistols around the country-they were filmed on the Bill Grundy interview in 1976. When the Pistols broke big and Punk started to break as well Siouxsie formed the band the banshees and they performed at the 100 club in 1976 with a line up the featured Sid Vicous and Marco Peroni(adam and the ants guitarist). This line up didn’t last long but they found replacements in Kenny Morris and John Mcckay. What was important to the band was their distinctive sound the drums of Kenny Morris were not entirely straight forward like other bands at the time. John Mckays guitar playing was cutting .

They released the brilliant album called The Scream in 1978 and this was followed up with Join Hands in 1979. At the time of the albums release tensions in the band were getting tense . Basically Siouxie and her banshee Steve Severin on the other and Mckay and Morris on the other. The band split up at a signing of an album at a Aberdeen record store . Robert Smith of the support band the Cure joined for the remaining tour. In a stroke of genius the band recruited former Slits drummer Budgie and John Mcgeogh once of Magazine. They released a good album in 1980 called Kalidiscope , but followed it up in 1981 with the album Juju. The 1982 albums is classed as their classic line up and it’s a good album but for me the 1981 album is a standout album.

There has always been this kind of Gothic sound to the Banshees sound due to the dense drumming of earlier records and the guitar work, where John Mcgeogh added things was to add effects to the guitar where the sound would go from gothic(on the 1981 album Juju called ‘Nightshift”) to Tenant(1980) which was almost punk psychedelia.

In 1982 they split with John Mcgeogh and he went onto join PIL and Armoury Show. They recruited Robert Smith again who was achieving more success with the Cure. The released a album , a live one at that called ‘Nocturne ‘ . This was like a greatest hits package in a way. Some songs sounded better than the originals in a live context.

They released a 1984 album called ‘Hyena”. In truth this was a album that did feature guitar work from Robert Smith but most of the tracks where heavily bass driven and drums. Robert Smith quit to concentrate more on the Cure. They then appointed Johnn Carruthers (ex of Clock DVA) and released a brilliant album called ‘Tinderbox”.A cover Version album was released about 10 months later in 1987 .

They released a string of good albums into the early 90s like Peepshow and Superstition. They split in the mid 90s to concentrate on their Career with the Creatures(Budgie and Siouxsie’s band).

For me they are one of the most influential bands I ever heard. The music was ahead of its time.

Voluntary or Paid - Driven by profit and an Ideal

Bit of an open ended blog this one. Over the years I have worked in a variety of diffrent roles some at lower level and some at management level. At this moment in time Im sort of taking time out and working voluntary. Its a immensely rewarding experience and opens your eyes to business and how they work and how people work within them.

Over the years I got used to the hieracal way of business where Managers would be respoibsle to their managers and as \a result I would have to motivate people around me just to get the workload manageable. Attending managers meetings which were driven by profit for an organisation regardless of personal cost of collegues and other factors.
In all my time of working in business I was sort of resentful of this desire for profit , not anarchic at all but sometimes the very companies I worked for would just fuck off.

In some of the companies as well there has been takeovers where companies would bring in new managers and people that were working there at the time would get nostalgic for the good old days, where they didnt have to deal with highly technical things.

I volunteered my services to a employer(in the loose sense), initially on 15 hours but at the moment increasing to 30. Its intresting working in that kind of environment, there is no pressure if for instance if you make a mistake on a till or if a customerslightly rude. You can work at your own pace without the need to justify your actions, you can carry a phone at all times (and answer it). You can sit down have a natter. In companies in my hometown talking to your nieghbours is frowned upon as it means your are not productive enough. In a voluntary job there is no need to justify anything.

Another thing what is amazing me is the ammount that people throw away and give to these shops. It really opens your eyes to what some people would class as rubbish, is what someone else needs.

jarre -1978 Equinox

I liked the Equinox album better, more electro. Where Oxygene was dense keyboard textures. Equinox was better produced

yyz-rush

Lyrical insight

"We can circle around like hurricanes
Dance and dream like lovers
Attack the day like birds of prey
Or scavengers under cover

[Chorus:]
Look in...to the eye of the storm
Look out...for the force without form
Look around...at the sight and the sound
Look in look out look around..." Rush-Force ten(87)

An abyss that laughs at creation,
A circus complete with all fools,
Foundations that lasted the ages,
Then ripped apart at their roots.
Beyond all this good is the terror,
The grip of a mercenary hand,
When savagery turns all good reason,
There's no turning back, no last stand.

Joy Division-heart and soul(80)
Come take this hand at twilight's door
I'll meet you there we'll share the moonlit floor
Through the driving rain, colours run in veins
Ozone fills the air, two figures disappear
Come let's take flight, let's quit this scene tonight
Whilst they sleep on endless, in their wrecked designs
Sleep on endless in your wrecked designs

Moths touched by flame repeat their fatal game
Forever and eternally, the cliffs around the crashing sea
Unsolved asnd endless, wait for me
Undulating far below, where lucid waters flow
Their faces seem to know ........

Where the land falls to an end
This hidden tale begins
Take a walk with me, down by the sea
Take a walk with me
Down by the sea

Re-Evaluation-Part 21 Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd

Not a re-evaluation, what a band they were in the 70s. Like Bowie who was extremely prolific in the 70s they started the 70s with albums like Atom Heart Mother, they truly became a rock band with the album ‘Meddle’ Which hinted at things to come, particularly on the track called ‘Echoes’ which is a 21 minute song which sort of has a manin part and then breaks it down. It’s a piece that contains like jamming over a solid bass and drum. The production of the album was also an improvement on earlier albums. They released an album called ‘Obscured by Clouds’ which often gets forgotten about that contains some good tracks, but is not as consitent as the follow up. ‘Dark Side Of the moon ‘ was an album that had been toured about 6 months before as a piece called ‘Eclipse’.

The album was excellently written and brilliantly produced and engineered . It has been said in the press by Walters and Gilmour that the album was when things started to go wrong. Due to the success of the album the target before that was to be rich and critically acclaimed, when you reach that point where do you go.
The follow up is good as well ‘Wish You Were Here’ which was released in 1975 the title track called ‘Shine on you crazy diamond’ was a song dedicated to the former lead singer Syd Barrett. That album is a truly brilliant piece of music, I always feel that David Gilmours input to that album is the main part of it. The albums that followed it ‘Animals’ and ‘The Wall ‘ were basically roger Waters albums with input from other Pink Floyd members. Although the wall would be the last great Waters and Gilmour album.

Its quite unique for a rock band to be appreciated by the indie, Rock and progressive crowds all at the same time. Like Kraftwerk who influenced all manner of techno and Electronic music. Pink Floyd were a band that were not afraid to slow tempo introduce pace and tempo to songs. Which for rock bands of that time was unheard of.

Download after december and be....banned

What constitutes “egregious” is unclear.

The BPI last abandoned its RIAA-style “sue em all” campaign back in 2006 after determining it had little effect on illegal P2P and only alienated music fans and the public at large. It now blames the govt not allowing the technical measures to take effect immediately for its decision to return to the courtroom to solve its problems until they do.

“Government disagreed with us, regrettably, and decided not to bring the technical measures into effect immediately and has said to us that it expects us to bring legal cases and that it will take that into account when it looks at whether or not to introduce technical measures,” says Taylor. “So we may well have to bring lawsuits at some level, and that is apparently expected of us by government, it is not something we really want to do because we believe that technical measures would be a better approach. However we are not going to be given that option initially and so it is something we may have to do on some scale.”

So it would seem if people in the UK didn’t already have enough to worry about with the corporate takeover of the Internet – website filtering, ban on public access Wi-Fi – the BPI will begin suing people until the govt has the power to disconnect them from the Internet.

Talk about heavy-handed tactics.

Stay tuned.
